Chongqing's First Foreign Capital Sister City - Bangkok, Thailand | Sister Cities

Chongqing - In recent years, Chongqing has seized the opportunity to accelerate building the city into a Hub for International Exchanges in Central and Western China, continuously integrating and expanding foreign affairs resources.

The city has increased efforts to invite foreign entities and expand its presence globally. As a result, Chongqing's international network has grown, fostering broader exchanges with sister cities, solidifying partnerships, and paving the way for a wider path of friendship.

On September 26, 2011, Chongqing Municipality and Bangkok City of Thailand signed the Establishment of Friendly Exchange Relations Agreement. Bangkok became the first foreign capital to establish a sister city relationship with Chongqing. 

In November 2014, Bangkok won the "Sister City Exchange and Cooperation Award with China" issued by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC).

Bangkok, the capital and largest city of Thailand, is the only provincial municipality in Thailand and also the political, economic, cultural, educational, and transportation center of Thailand, with more than 50% of industrial enterprises and 80% of institutions of higher learning. Besides, Bangkok has a well-developed tourism industry and is home to many places of interest, making it the city that currently hosts the most Asian Games. 

Since establishing the friendship between Chongqing and Bangkok, leaders of the two cities have led delegations to visit each other often to promote comprehensive cooperation in tourism, education, economy, and transportation.

In May 2018, the delegation of the 32nd Professional Training Program of the Bangkok Municipal Government visited Chongqing, and they agreed to work together to continue to promote comprehensive exchanges between the two cities in economy, trade, culture, and other fields.

In August 2019, Bangkok sent a delegation to attend the Smart China Expo held in Chongqing.

In October 2021, Deputy Secretary-General of Bangkok, Thailand, Zalun Pong, attended the Lancang-Mekong Mayors' Culture and Tourism Forum held in Chongqing online.

On July 1, 2022, the signing ceremony of the Thailand cooperation project of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor was held in Chongqing. The parties agreed to jointly build the "Chongqing-Bangkok" two-way railway transportation corridor.

On December 15, 2023, the "China (Chongqing)-Thailand Regional Cooperation and Exchange Conference on the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor" was held in Bangkok, Thailand, to promote the joint construction of the new land-sea corridor between the two places and share new achievements of cooperation.

On December 29, 2023, the cross-border railway trains of the New International Land-Sea Corridor (Chongqing, China-Vientiane, Laos-Bangkok, Thailand) were launched from the Central Station of Tuanjie Village, Chongqing Municipality, and the Madapu Station in Bangkok, Thailand, respectively, and completed the two-way debut.

In the area of cultural exchanges, the Chongqing cultural delegation visited Bangkok many times and was warmly welcomed. The two sides also jointly held the "Thailand-Chongqing Cultural Week" at the Siam Theatre in Bangkok to celebrate the 36th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between China and Thailand.
