Chongqing - In the heart of Chongqing, LocaJoy Theme Park is a beloved panda keeper — Zhang Lu. As an experienced caretaker, Zhang is not just a guardian; he forms profound friendships with these charming giants. In this edition of Faces of Chongqing, we have the unique opportunity to explore Zhang Lu's special bond with the giant pandas.

"I joined LocaJoy in 2017, initially in charge of caring for large herbivores like African elephants, zebras, and big antelopes. In 2019, the park started planning to introduce giant pandas, and after designing the panda pavilion, construction began in 2020. By 2023, we welcomed four adorable giant pandas, and I was fortunate enough to become their keeper," recalls Zhang Lu. The initial days brought excitement and anxiety as he navigated the responsibilities of caring for these precious animals.

Zhang Lu's day-to-day life teems with both challenges and rewards. His routine involves closely monitoring the pandas' behaviors and physical health, meticulously logging their diets, weights, and temperatures. For Zhang, seeing the pandas thrive is the ultimate reward.

Beyond mere caretaking, Zhang is dedicated to designing varied and enriching environments and activities for the pandas. One memorable experience was during Yongchuan's first snowfall, when he and his team crafted snowmen for the pandas, introducing these mountain dwellers to the delights of winter.

"Seeing the joy on children's faces when they encounter the pandas always fills me with immense satisfaction," Zhang shares. He aims to foster a deeper public understanding of the pandas' distinct nature and the conservation efforts needed to protect them.

Looking ahead, Zhang harbors aspirations to broaden his expertise and better serve these enchanting creatures. "I hope to expand my knowledge and skills, enhancing my ability to care for these lovely giant pandas and raise public awareness about wildlife conservation."
